Chempricehub Alert: Analysis of Weakening Port MEG Basis on May 12
Published on 2026-05-12

On May 12, 2026, the morning basis quotations for port ethylene glycol (polyester-grade, imported, primarily ethylene-based) spot contracts (minimum 500 tons) were as follows. Today's contract basis quotations ranged from +100 to +120, with a clear weakening intraday. By the close, this week's contract basis was quoted at +100, next week's contract basis at +110 to +115, and May’s later contract basis at +115 to +130.

Chempricehub rating for ethylene glycol: bearish -1

Spot Market: On May 12, 2026, the port ethylene glycol spot basis weakened notably. This week's contract basis settled at +100, while next week's and May’s later contract basis also declined in tandem, indicating weak procurement demand in the spot market and downward pressure on spot prices.

Futures Market: On May 11, the main ethylene glycol 2609 contract closed at 4,833 yuan/ton, down 3 yuan/ton, with open interest increasing by 8,949 lots. The intensified long-short tug-of-war and the weakening spot basis will cap upside room for futures prices, resulting in a generally mildly bearish impact.
