Chempricehub Important Reminder: Elevra Lithium Mine Expansion Ahead of Schedule, Bearish for Lithium Carbonate
Published on 2026-01-15
January 15 - Recently, Australian lithium mining company Elevra Lithium has announced plans to advance the expansion of its Quebec lithium project by two years, aiming to complete construction by the end of 2029. This expansion will increase spodumene production from 200,000 tons per year to 315,000 tons per year. Chempricehub's analysis of lithium carbonate shows a bearish score of -1.5. Elevra Lithium's decision to accelerate the expansion of its Quebec lithium project by two years will raise spodumene production from 200,000 tons to 315,000 tons annually, a 57.5% increase. As spodumene is a key raw material for lithium carbonate production, the increased supply is expected to reduce production costs and enhance potential output. Against a backdrop of stagnant demand, this development is likely to exert downward pressure on the spot price of lithium carbonate. Combined with data from the lithium carbonate futures market, such as the closing price of the main contract 2605 at 161,940 yuan per ton, a recent decline of 2,480 yuan, and a reduction in open interest, this news may reinforce medium- to long-term bearish expectations, potentially leading to further weakness in futures prices.
