How does R123 compare with other halogenated solvents in industrial cleaning applications?
In the broader family of halogenated solvents, dichlorotrifluoroethane (R123) occupies a distinct position. Unlike chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene, R123 offers lower toxicity and reduced environmental persistence, making it suitable for precision cleaning where residue control is critical. Its boiling point near 28°C allows easy evaporation without leaving surface films, a key advantage in electronics and optical component cleaning. However, regulatory pressure on all ozone-depleting substances has pushed many formulators toward hydrofluoroethers or alcohols. The solvent's role as a blowing agent in foam insulation also faces competition from hydrocarbon and water-based systems. For formulators, R123 remains a viable option where flammability restrictions rule out hydrocarbons and where performance parity with legacy CFC-113 is required.
