How is DOA positioned in the lubricant base oil market compared to other esters?
DOA functions as a diester base oil in high-performance lubrication. Its polar ester groups provide strong adsorption to metal surfaces, giving excellent lubricity and low friction coefficients. It operates effectively from about -60°C to 120°C, making it suitable for low-temperature greases and as a base component in aviation engine oils. Compared with PAO, DOA offers superior additive solubility and oil-film strength, but has weaker hydrolysis resistance. It blends well with mineral oils and PAO to improve their solvency and lubricating properties. Key applications include screw compressor oils, gear oils, and transmission fluids where thermal stability and shear resistance are critical for long equipment life.

    One caveat: DOA's polarity can cause swelling of nitrile rubber seals, a common issue in lubricant systems. When switching from PAO or mineral oil to DOA-containing formulations, verify seal compatibility. Also, its biodegradability is a selling point for environmentally sensitive applications like marine or forestry equipment, which can justify a price premium over conventional base oils.
