How is lithium chloride demand tied to the broader lithium market outlook for 2026?
Lithium chloride demand is closely linked to the lithium market cycle. With Ganfeng's chairman projecting carbonate prices to exceed 150,000 RMB per tonne by 2026, upstream lithium chemicals including chloride are expected to follow. Storage demand is a key growth driver, with domestic China installations forecast to exceed 300 GWh in 2026, pushing overall lithium battery demand growth above 30%. On the supply side, carbonate imports fell 10.3% month-on-month in September, while domestic production rose 9.31% but at only 43% utilization, indicating constrained capacity release. The Yichun Jianxiawo mine, representing 11% of national carbonate capacity, remains shut with no restart timeline, providing strong price support. Inventory destocking across the supply chain is accelerating, suggesting tighter availability of lithium compounds including chloride into 2026.

The chloride-specific angle is that brine projects like Mariana produce chloride first, so any carbonate price rally creates an arbitrage opportunity for chloride-to-carbonate conversion. If carbonate hits 150,000 RMB, expect chloride prices to be bid up aggressively as converters compete for feedstock.
