The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Japan will suspend power generation due to an electrical leakage.
Published on 2026-03-16

According to a report by Japan Broadcasting Association Television on March 13, the No. 6 unit of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Japan, which had just resumed operations in January this year, experienced a generator leakage and triggered an alarm. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) decided to suspend power generation and transmission on the same day to investigate the cause of the malfunction.

The daily report released by TEPCO on the same day indicated that around 16:00 local time on March 12, a minor grounding fault occurred in the generator of the No. 6 unit of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant, triggering an alarm. Relevant departments are currently investigating the cause. At present, the reactor and turbine generator of the No. 6 unit are still in operation, with no significant fluctuations observed in equipment parameters or generator output power, and no radioactive materials have leaked to the outside.

The No. 6 unit of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant resumed operations on January 21 this year. This marks the first restart of a nuclear power plant under TEPCO since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident caused by the "3·11" Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

Before and after the restart, the No. 6 unit of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant experienced multiple malfunctions. During the operation to withdraw control rods from the reactor in the early hours of January 22, an alarm sounded, prompting TEPCO to temporarily shut down the unit on the same day. After determining that the alarm was triggered by a frequency converter, the unit was restarted on February 9. According to reports from Japan Broadcasting Association Television, TEPCO is currently assessing whether the new malfunction will affect the plan for the unit to fully commence commercial operations on March 18.
