What are the key demand drivers for chitin and its derivatives in China's nutraceutical and medical sectors?
Chitin, or chitosan after deacetylation, is increasingly positioned as a high-value biopolymer in China. Domestic chitosan production capacity reached 18,300 tonnes by 2022, with output at 15,400 tonnes and net exports of 8,200 tonnes. Domestic demand has grown rapidly from 2,500 tonnes in 2017 to 7,200 tonnes in 2022, driven by health supplements, food additives, and medical applications. The domestic market size for chitosan reached RMB 558 million in 2022, growing at a compound annual rate of 18%. However, the industry remains fragmented, with over 90% of producers having capacity below 100 tonnes. This suggests consolidation opportunities and pricing power shifts toward larger, higher-quality producers serving pharmaceutical-grade and specialty applications.

Watch the export channel closely. Japan and the US historically absorbed most Chinese chitosan output, but domestic health-conscious consumption is now the growth engine. The CAGR of 18% in market size versus roughly 23% demand growth implies margin pressure at the low end. Producers targeting medical-grade chitin for wound dressings or tissue engineering can command premiums, but certification barriers remain the key bottleneck.
