Subtilisin protease spans two distinct markets. Industrial grade, mainly for detergents and textiles, prioritizes cost-efficiency, thermostability, and compatibility with bleach or surfactants. Protein engineering has produced hundreds of mutants tailored for these harsh conditions. Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications, such as nattokinase for cardiovascular health, demand higher purity and specific activity, often measured in FU units. Nattokinase, discovered in 1980, dissolves fibrin clots and activates plasminogen, positioning it as a natural alternative to conventional thrombolytics. The regulatory burden differs sharply: industrial enzymes face fewer barriers, while health products require clinical evidence and import compliance.
