Stearic acid functions as a versatile industrial additive across multiple sectors. In plastics processing, it serves as an efficient internal and external lubricant for PE, PP, and PVC, improving melt flow, reducing equipment wear, and preventing mold sticking. It also reacts with calcium and zinc salts to form heat stabilizers that prevent PVC degradation during high-temperature processing. In rubber manufacturing, stearic acid acts as a vulcanization activator, working synergistically with zinc oxide to accelerate curing, enhance tensile strength, and improve filler dispersion. The typical industrial grade 1801 contains 40-60% stearic acid and 30-50% palmitic acid, with low iodine value preferred for optimal lubrication. Beyond rubber and plastics, stearic acid is essential in cosmetics as an emulsifier and thickener, in coatings as a stabilizer, and as a raw material for metallic stearates used across numerous applications.
