What are the main downstream applications and growth segments for o-cresol beyond electronics?
o-Cresol serves a diverse downstream portfolio. Its largest and fastest-growing outlet is o-cresol formaldehyde epoxy resin for electronic-grade molding compounds, driven by China's semiconductor and 5G expansion. Beyond electronics, o-cresol is used to produce the herbicide MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid), disinfectants for medical applications, fragrances, chemical reagents, and antioxidants. Other derivatives include o-methyl salicylic acid, p-chloro-o-cresol, o-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and 2-methyl-5-isopropylphenol. It also finds use as a diluent in sebacic acid production, a plasticizer component, and in making phenolic resins and insulating varnishes. The broad application base provides a cushion against cyclical downturns in any single end-market, though electronics remains the key growth engine.

    The agrochemical angle is worth watching. MCPA is a major phenoxy herbicide used broadly in Asia, and its production economics are tied to o-cresol prices. If o-cresol stays tight, herbicide makers may face margin pressure or seek substitution. That could create a two-speed market: electronics buyers paying premiums, while agrochemical buyers push back on price increases.
