What drives xylitol prices and supply-demand balance in China?
China dominates global xylitol production, with Huakang as the crystal xylitol leader holding roughly 25% global share. The industry has seen consolidation since 2015-2017 as small exporters exited due to overcapacity. Prices have been volatile: Huakang's xylitol unit price was estimated at 19,400 RMB/ton in 2021, rising to 23,300 in 2022, reflecting cost inflation and demand recovery. Feedstock is corn-based xylan, so corn prices directly impact margins. In 2026, a strong El Nino pushed sugar prices up over 20% in a month, reviving substitution demand for xylitol and other sweeteners. However, the sector struggles with 'revenue growth without profit growth'—Huakang's 2025 H1 revenue rose 33% but net profit fell 68.6%, indicating intense price competition and high raw material costs.

Short-term price direction hinges on corn costs and sugar prices. If sugar stays high, xylitol demand gets a tailwind, but capacity utilization at Huakang's new 65,000-ton line is only around 60% in 2022, so supply is ample. Buyers should negotiate annual contracts now to lock in prices before any El Nino-driven cost pass-through.
