Which Chinese companies are best positioned to benefit from the strontium carbonate price rally?
Two listed companies dominate China's strontium carbonate sector. RedStar Development (600367) controls high-grade celestite mines in Chongqing with ore grades of 54-59%, achieving 100% self-sufficiency in feedstock. It currently has 30,000 tonnes of annual capacity, with a new 60,000-tonne line expected to start in 2025, and plans to expand further to 70,000-80,000 tonnes. RedStar pioneered a continuous carbonization process that meets environmental standards, cuts energy use by 30%, and produces electronic-grade material supplied to Samsung and LG. Jinrui Mining (600714) operates the Dafengshan mine in Qinghai, China's largest celestite reserve, with about 50,000 tonnes of capacity. It produced 21,300 tonnes of strontium carbonate in 2024, running near full capacity. Jinrui's gross margin on strontium carbonate rose from 28% in 2023 to 42% in 2024, and it is building a 45,000-tonne expansion. Both companies' earnings have surged, with RedStar's net profit up 209.87% year-on-year in the first three quarters of 2024.

Beyond the two giants, niche players supply high-purity and nano-sized strontium carbonate for electronics. Guoci Materials and Hengyang Jinyuan Nano focus on MLCC-grade materials, while Jiangxi Xinnanshan and Hubei Zhanpeng serve LCD glass and phosphor applications. These specialty producers may command higher margins but face stricter qualification barriers. Investors should also watch for potential export controls on strontium products, which could further tighten domestic supply.
