Why is DMT demand growing in engineering plastics like PCT?
DMT is a key monomer for producing 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), which is polymerized with DMT or PTA to make PCT resin, a high-temperature semicrystalline polyester. PCT offers heat resistance between 130-150°C continuous use and flexural temperatures of 243-260°C, outperforming PET and competing with PPS and high-temperature polyamides. Applications span electrical/electronic components like connectors, relay elements, and circuit boards, plus automotive engine-compartment parts. As China upgrades manufacturing and electronics miniaturization advances, PCT demand is rising, pulling DMT consumption. Global DMT supply remains concentrated in the US, Japan, and South Korea, so China's growing PCT capacity increases import reliance for high-purity DMT grades.
