Why is L-methionine priced higher than DL-methionine, and what drives the premium?
L-methionine is the biologically active form that animals and humans can directly utilize, whereas DL-methionine contains 50% D-form that must be converted in the body. This gives L-methionine a relative bioavailability advantage of 20-40% over petrochemical-derived DL-methionine, according to CJ's promotional data. However, production costs remain structurally higher: while DL-methionine is made via chemical synthesis (acrolein route) at scale by oligopolists like Evonik, Adisseo, and Novus, L-methionine requires either fermentation or enzymatic conversion of precursors like O-succinylhomoserine. CJ's Malaysia plant, the world's first bio-based L-methionine facility, uses a two-step fermentation-enzyme process. Current L-methionine yields from fermentation remain modest—around 8.24 g/L after 84 hours in recent academic work—keeping costs elevated. As China pushes for higher feed efficiency and reduced imports, the L-form's premium is likely to persist until fermentation economics improve substantially.
