Can dimethyl ether be used directly as a substitute for liquefied petroleum gas?
Dimethyl ether is increasingly positioned as a viable LPG alternative in China. Its physical properties closely resemble LPG, including easy compressibility, condensation and vaporization, making it suitable for blending into LPG cylinders or even full substitution in some regions. DME burns without producing environmentally damaging gases and offers better safety in storage and transport than petroleum gas. It also has superior water and oil solubility compared with propane or butane, broadening its application range. As a fuel, DME performs well in pre-mixed gas calorific value and theoretical combustion temperature, and it works as a peak-shaving gas for city pipeline networks. Beyond fuel, DME serves as an aerosol propellant, refrigerant, and feedstock for producing formaldehyde and olefins. Its price advantage is notable, historically ranging around 1,800-2,500 yuan per ton, well below LPG.
