China Methanol Production and Capacity Utilization Rate Weekly Data Analysis (August 28 – September 3, 2026)

Published on 2026-09-03
  1. Qualitative Analysis of Production and Capacity Utilization Trends

This week (Aug. 28–Sep. 3, 2026), China’s methanol output totaled 1,863,945 tonnes, an increase of 13,730 tonnes from the previous week. The capacity utilization rate reached 82.50%, up 0.73% week-on-week.

Table 1 China Methanol Production and Capacity Utilization Weekly Comparison (Unit: tonne, %)

Item Current Week Previous Week WoW Change
Production 1,863,945 1,850,215 0.74%
Capacity Utilization 82.50% 81.90% 0.73%

New maintenance shutdowns were seen this week, including Aowei Qianyuan, Shaanxi Weihua and Inner Mongolia Xinao, plus one unit each in Inner Mongolia and Tianjin. In addition, two units in Xinjiang started output reduction during this period. Meanwhile, some units resumed operation or exited output reduction, including Inner Mongolia Xinhang and Sichuan Wanhua, plus three units in Inner Mongolia and one in Hebei. As the total capacity restored exceeded the capacity lost during the period, capacity utilization and production both increased.

  1. Forecast of Production and Capacity Utilization Trends

Next week, China’s methanol output is expected to reach approximately 1,904,900 tonnes, with capacity utilization at around 84.32%, both higher than the current period. Planned capacity restarts next week will exceed the capacity scheduled for maintenance or output reduction, driving capacity utilization and production higher.

  1. Comparison of Capacity Utilization and Price Trends

This week, China’s methanol capacity utilization stood at 82.50%, up 0.73% week-on-week and down 4.78% year-on-year. Domestic methanol capacity utilization continued to edge up, increasing market supply. Meanwhile, the futures market surged sharply, trading sentiment kept improving, and market turnover rose, leading to sustained substantial price gains in major producing regions.

Sample Description: The China methanol weekly production and capacity utilization data published by Chempricehub are first-hand statistics compiled from a sample covering 180 domestic methanol producers, with a sample coverage rate of 100%. The statistical cycle runs from Friday of the previous week to Thursday of the current week, and the data are released at 14:30 on working Thursdays.

Term Definitions:

Output: Generally refers to the quantity of products that meet relevant standards and are actually produced by a manufacturing enterprise over a given period. It is not a commercial sales volume concept, but rather refers to the weight or volume of goods under a defined system of measurement—i.e., actual output.

Capacity Utilization: Indicates the degree to which an enterprise’s production capacity is utilized, also known as operating load. It is generally calculated as the ratio of product output or raw material processing throughput to effective capacity.

Statistical Scope: The weekly production and capacity utilization statistics cover the period from Friday of the previous week to Thursday of the current week. The data are released at 14:30 on working Thursdays.

The uptick in capacity utilization to 82.5% signals firmer supply, but with restarts outpacing shutdowns I expect downstream margins to stay under pressure unless demand catches up.
