Cuba Experiences Second Nationwide Power Outage in a Week
Published on 2026-03-23

On March 21, Cuba experienced a nationwide power outage, less than a week after the previous nationwide blackout on March 16.

Local time on March 21, the Cuban Electric Union announced that the national power system was completely disconnected at 18:38. Shortly after, the Cuban Electric Union updated the outage time to 18:32.

The Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines also released a statement indicating that efforts to restore power had begun, but no cause for the outage was provided.

This large-scale blackout occurred less than a week after the previous nationwide power outage on March 16.

Due to U.S. sanctions, Cuba has long struggled to import fuel and the equipment needed to repair its severely aging power plants, leading to a strained national power supply. Since October 2024, Cuba has experienced multiple nationwide blackouts due to power facility failures, hurricane impacts, and other factors.
