How concentrated is China's 1-propanol supply, and what does it mean for buyers?
China's propanol market is highly concentrated. As of 2022, the top two producers, Sanwei Chemical and Nanjing Rongxin Chemical, together held 54% of the market, and the country had 481 production enterprises in total. That structure means pricing power rests with a small group, and when those leaders tighten quotes, the whole market follows, as seen in the recent run past 10,000 yuan/mt. Regionally, East, South, Central and North China dominate both production and consumption. Globally, Europe and China account for roughly 70% of the market, with Asia-Pacific consuming about a third of total volume. For buyers, the practical implication is limited leverage in tight markets and real exposure to single-supplier risk, making dual sourcing and contract coverage more important than spot opportunism.

Concentration cuts both ways. A 54% top-two share gives producers discipline during upcycles, but it also invites imports whenever domestic prices detach from global levels. Watch the import arbitrage window closely; once overseas material lands competitively, the same tightness that lifted prices can reverse quickly.
