How concentrated is China's synthetic camphor production capacity and what does it mean for buyers?
China's synthetic camphor industry has undergone dramatic consolidation. A decade ago, over a dozen producers operated, but stricter environmental rules forced most to shut down or relocate. Today, only a few remain—notably Fujian Qingsong, Suzhou Synthetic, and Jiaxing Dongping. Suzhou Synthetic halted production in 2017 after its industrial park was closed for environmental violations, and it shows no sign of restarting. Excluding Suzhou, Qingsong controls about 79% of effective domestic capacity and roughly 45% globally, making it the world's largest supplier. This near-monopoly gives Qingsong significant influence over pricing and supply stability. For downstream buyers in pharmaceuticals, daily chemicals, and industrial sectors, this means limited alternative domestic sources and potential vulnerability to supply disruptions or price hikes.

    Buyers should note that Qingsong's capacity is tied to turpentine, its main feedstock, which accounts for about 70% of raw material costs. Turpentine prices are volatile, influenced by pine resin harvests and forestry policies. Any feedstock shock will hit synthetic camphor prices directly, and with few alternative suppliers, downstream users have limited hedging options beyond building inventory.
