How does China's m-xylene supply-demand balance affect market dynamics?
China's m-xylene market has historically faced a supply-demand gap, with domestic production unable to fully meet downstream requirements. Total domestic capacity is around 100 kt per year, led by Yanshan Petrochemical's 80 kt unit, which primarily supplies its own isophthalic acid plant. Other producers, including Jiangsu Donglian Chemical and various smaller facilities, often run at low utilization rates. Despite this shortfall, imports have been shrinking—from 5.5 kt in 2018 to an estimated 1.7 kt in 2019—as some producers converted units to boost m-xylene output. Global consumption is approximately 230 kt annually, with major international players being Amoco (110 kt capacity) and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (55 kt). In high-purity m-xylene, China's production and application remain underdeveloped, with consumption below 10 kt, mainly for phthalonitrile and dimethylaniline, while isophthalic acid producers still rely on imports.

    The shrinking import figure is misleading—it reflects captive use by integrated producers, not true self-sufficiency. For merchant buyers, high-purity m-xylene remains tight. Keep an eye on new capacity from Suzhou Jiutai and Hangzhou Dayang, which could shift the balance in coming years.
