How does DOP compare with DOTP in performance, cost and regulatory acceptance for PVC applications?
DOP and DOTP are structural isomers with nearly identical molecular weights around 390, but their performance profiles diverge significantly. DOTP offers superior heat resistance with volatile loss below 8% versus 12% for DOP, better cold flexibility down to -40°C, and volume resistivity of 10^14 ohm-cm, a hundredfold improvement over DOP's 10^12. This makes DOTP the preferred choice for wire and cable compounds meeting IEC standards. Regulatory acceptance also favors DOTP: it passes EU RoHS, REACH registration and FDA food-contact approval, while DOP faces restrictions. The price gap is modest, roughly 8,500 yuan per ton for DOP versus 9,200 for DOTP in recent market conditions. For non-medical, non-food applications, DOTP delivers comparable plasticizing efficiency with better environmental credentials, explaining why DOTP has overtaken DOP as the largest-volume plasticizer for the first time in sixty years.

    The substitution trend is not absolute. DOP retains advantages in gelling speed and lower cost for commodity PVC products like flooring, artificial leather and general packaging. Buyers should evaluate application-specific requirements rather than switching blindly, especially where processing economics dominate over long-term performance.
