How does the chlor-alkali industry structure affect EDC availability in China?
China's EDC supply is closely tied to the chlor-alkali industry's structure and profitability. Major producers like Shanghai Chlor-Alkali Chemical operate integrated facilities with capacities of 1.02 million tonnes of caustic soda and 720,000 tonnes of EDC annually. These plants balance chlorine output against caustic soda demand, meaning EDC production often adjusts to maintain chlorine balance. When caustic soda prices are high, producers maximize output, increasing EDC availability as a byproduct. When caustic soda weakens, producers may cut operating rates, tightening EDC supply. The industry is also consolidating around coastal integrated complexes, such as Wanhua's Fujian site, which adds EDC capacity as part of larger MDI and PVC projects. This integration reduces merchant EDC availability but improves cost efficiency for captive users.
