Sweet orange oil is obtained by cold-pressing the peel, a simple and direct method that keeps costs low, with 10 ml bottles retailing under USD 3. This contrasts sharply with neroli oil from orange blossoms, which requires steam distillation of thousands of flowers to yield a tiny amount, making it far more expensive. Bitter orange leaf oil, also steam-distilled, sits in between because leaves are abundant and regenerate quickly. The choice of extraction method and plant part determines not only price but also chemical composition. Sweet orange peel is rich in limonene, giving it that classic citrus scent, while neroli contains higher linalool and linalyl acetate.
