How does the m-cresol-to-menthol value chain reshape China's flavor and fragrance market?
China is breaking its near-total reliance on imported L-menthol, a global market of about 50,000 tons/year historically dominated by Symrise (18,000 tons), BASF (17,000 tons) and Takasago (6,000 tons). Haihua Technology, under Huilong Shares, is the only domestic player with the full 'm-cresol-thymol-L-menthol' chain, commissioning 3,000 tons/year of L-menthol in June 2022 and 10,000 tons/year of m-cresol in August 2022. Zhejiang NHU started commercial L-menthol production in October 2022 via the citral route, with 5,000 tons/year capacity and plans to double. Wanhua Chemical also built a 1,000-ton demonstration unit using citral-based asymmetric catalysis. These projects directly consume m-cresol or compete for the same downstream markets, tightening feedstock supply.
