How does the phosphoric acid price cycle affect polyphosphoric acid economics?
PPA economics are closely tied to upstream phosphoric acid and yellow phosphorus prices. In 2021, a strong rally in fertilizer, pesticide and new energy sectors pushed phosphoric acid prices to near-decade highs in the second half, creating significant margin pressure for PPA producers. The cost structure is dominated by feedstock, with thermal-route PPA particularly exposed to yellow phosphorus and electricity costs. Conversely, when phosphoric acid prices corrected sharply, as seen in recent wet-process acid assessments showing deep pullbacks with limited downside at low positions, PPA producers may gain temporary relief. However, PPA's specialty nature and higher purity requirements mean price transmission to downstream buyers is often sticky, with contracts adjusting more slowly than spot phosphoric acid markets.

For procurement planning, track yellow phosphorus and thermal phosphoric acid spreads rather than just PPA spot prices. Seasonal demand from fertilizer and construction sectors can create windows where PPA buyers secure better terms. Consider locking in annual contracts during market troughs to hedge against upstream volatility.
