What are the main downstream applications driving polyphosphoric acid demand in China?
Polyphosphoric acid serves diverse downstream markets. In organic synthesis, it acts as a dehydrating, cyclizing and acylating agent, plus a catalyst or solvent for condensation, cyclization, rearrangement and substitution reactions. Key end-uses include pharmaceutical intermediates, pigment synthesis, and carbon fiber production. PPA is also used in asphalt and cement modification, and as a raw material for ammonium polyphosphate flame retardants. Emerging applications include biomedical materials, such as hemostatic hydrogels for wound dressings, where PolyP's coagulation-promoting properties are exploited. Construction and infrastructure development continue to support demand for PPA as a building material additive, while the shift toward high-performance materials in electronics and energy storage adds premium growth potential.

The biomedical angle is interesting but niche. For volume demand, watch the flame retardant and construction sectors. Ammonium polyphosphate production is particularly sensitive to PPA quality and price, so tracking APP capacity additions gives a good read on future PPA consumption trends.
