Trans-anethole is the key quality marker for fennel and star anise oils. Conventional steam-distilled anise oil typically contains only 80-88% trans-anethole, carrying heavy cooked notes and batch inconsistency that limit use in premium food flavors, personal care and fine fragrances. Newer low-temperature vacuum extraction can stabilize trans-anethole at 95% or higher, delivering cleaner sweetness and better batch reproducibility. This purity gap translates directly into price premiums, as high-purity material meets stricter formulation needs in confectionery, oral care, and aroma chemicals. China dominates global anise oil supply at roughly 80% of world output, so domestic refining capability upgrades are shifting export mix toward higher-value fractions rather than crude oil.
