How does TSP fit into China's phosphate fertilizer supply-demand balance and environmental policy landscape?
TSP represents only about 3.3% of China's phosphate fertilizer market, far smaller than MAP and DAP. Global TSP consumption was roughly 4.8-5.5 million tonnes annually in recent years, with 2020 output at a decade low of 4.8 million tonnes. China's phosphate fertilizer production has been declining due to strict environmental policies targeting phosphorus pollution, gypsum disposal, and energy consumption. The government has capped new capacity for ammonium phosphates and yellow phosphorus, accelerating closure of inefficient plants. For TSP specifically, no new capacity is expected in the next three years. Yunnan's dominance stems from abundant phosphate rock resources, with the province producing about 25% of China's 114 million tonnes of phosphate ore. Producers like Yuntianhua benefit from integrated phosphate rock mining, achieving gross margins above 37% on phosphate fertilizers in 2024.

The environmental crackdown is actually supportive for TSP prices long-term. With supply constrained and global food security concerns driving fertilizer demand, the supply-demand gap could widen. However, watch for substitution risk from MAP/DAP if their prices become relatively more attractive to international buyers.
