How is China's polysulfone supply-demand balance shifting through 2025?
China consumed about 12,250 tons of polysulfone resin in 2022, up 11.3% year-on-year, and the first half of 2023 showed 6,597 tons, up 7.7%. Demand growth is steady, driven by medical devices, water treatment membranes, and food-contact applications. However, domestic production has historically lagged, with imports filling the gap. Starting in 2023, roughly 25,000 tons of new domestic capacity began small-batch supply or commissioning, including projects from Youju New Materials and Shandong Haoran. This wave of capacity is set to transform the market from import-dominated to self-sufficient. The shift is already visible: domestic players are gaining share in standard PSU grades, while high-end PPSU and PESU for aerospace and advanced medical use still rely on Solvay, BASF, and Sumitomo. Expect price pressure on standard grades as local output ramps.

The 25,000 tons of new capacity is nearly double current domestic demand. Oversupply risk is real for standard PSU grades by 2025-2026. But don't expect uniform price drops—specialty grades for blood dialysis membranes and baby bottles will keep premium pricing due to certification barriers.
