How is China's precipitated silica supply structure changing, and what does it mean for downstream tire makers?
China's precipitated silica capacity reached roughly 2.69 million tonnes in 2021, with actual output around 1.8 million tonnes, implying a utilization rate near 67%. The top five domestic producers held about 29% of capacity, a fragmented structure that is now consolidating under environmental pressure. Plants below 50,000 tonnes capacity accounted for 24% of the total in 2021, down from 29% a year earlier, showing clear attrition of small, inefficient players. Overseas, Evonik and Solvay each operate over 500,000 tonnes of capacity, giving them scale advantages in high-dispersion grades. For Chinese tire exporters, this matters because European and other green tire labeling rules push demand toward high-dispersion silica, a segment where domestic producers are still catching up technologically.

    The consolidation trend favors buyers in the long run, as larger producers invest in quality consistency. But near-term, expect regional supply tightness when environmental inspections hit Shandong or Fujian clusters. Locking in annual contracts with domestic leaders is safer than spot buying from small mills.
