How is China's sodium phosphate market structured, and what are the key demand drivers?
China's sodium phosphate (TSP) market sits within a broader phosphate chemical industry that is undergoing structural shifts. While TSP itself is a mature product, its demand is being reshaped by downstream trends. The traditional boiler water treatment segment, a major consumer, is facing substitution pressure from multi-functional phosphorus-free scale inhibitors, as highlighted in recent technical discussions. Meanwhile, the detergent sector's historical use of phosphates is declining due to environmental concerns over eutrophication, mirroring the contraction seen in sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP). In 2025, STPP and SHMP output fell 8.3% and 3.3% year-on-year respectively, with operating rates dropping to around 36%. This suggests a similar, albeit slower, erosion for TSP in its traditional cleaning and water treatment roles, though food-grade and specialized industrial applications offer more stable demand.

The substitution trend is real, but don't overlook the price advantage. TSP remains a low-cost option for many industrial users, especially in price-sensitive regions. The real question is whether stricter environmental regulations will force a faster switch to phosphorus-free alternatives in boiler treatment, which could accelerate demand erosion beyond current expectations.
