How is cresol used in disinfectants and what are the safety considerations?
Cresol, particularly mixed cresol, remains a classic disinfectant active ingredient. When saponified with soap, it forms the well-known Lysol or cresol soap solution, effective against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses. Typical use concentrations are 1-3% for skin disinfection, around 3% for environmental surfaces, and 5% for instrument disinfection, requiring thorough rinsing afterward. Cresol's fungicidal efficacy is notable: a 5% cresol soap solution can kill representative fungi within 10 minutes, while lower concentrations require extended contact times. However, cresol is toxic, with an oral LD50 of about 207 mg/kg in rats, causing corrosive damage to skin, respiratory tract, and mucous membranes. This toxicity has driven consumer products toward milder alternatives like PCMX (chloroxylenol), though cresol-based disinfectants remain important in institutional and medical settings.

While PCMX and quaternary ammonium compounds are replacing cresol in consumer goods, industrial and agricultural disinfectant demand remains sticky.
