How is DEP used as a solvent in fragrances and what are its functional limits?
DEP is one of the most common solvents in household and personal care fragrances, prized for being colorless, nearly odorless, and highly effective at dissolving solid aroma chemicals like vanillin, coumarin, and synthetic musks. It prevents crystallization or cloudiness at low temperatures, making it valuable in perfumes, body products, hair oils, candles, fabric softeners, and cleaning bases. However, DEP has no fixative properties—low-boiling fragrance notes still evaporate quickly, leaving no residual scent. Its high boiling point means it simply volatilizes later without contributing aroma. In candle fragrances, DEP is preferred over ethanol or DPG, which can cause excessive flame. For formulators, DEP's role is strictly functional solvency, not performance enhancement, and its use is increasingly scrutinized due to phthalate concerns.

    One practical note: DEP is unsuitable for dishwasher liquids due to stability issues. Also, because DEP is odorless, some traders historically diluted fragrance concentrates with it to cut costs—gas chromatography easily detects such adulteration, so buyers should verify purity and concentration claims.
