Selecting polyacrylamide (PAM) is not about the highest molecular weight or price, but precise matching to wastewater characteristics. The first step is identifying the charge nature of suspended solids: anionic PAM suits positively charged inorganic particles common in mining, coal washing, and metallurgy; cationic PAM targets negatively charged organic matter in municipal sludge, food processing, and paper mill effluent; nonionic PAM performs well in acidic or high-salinity streams where charge sensitivity matters. Next, fine-tune molecular weight and ionic degree: higher molecular weight creates larger, stronger flocs for sedimentation, while moderate molecular weight is better for filter press dewatering. Ionic degree controls reaction speed, and optimizing it can significantly cut dosage rates. A common pitfall is overdosing or using the wrong ionic type, which not only wastes chemicals but can destabilize floc formation, raising overall treatment costs.
