How should PVC processors choose between ESBO and EFAME plasticizers?
ESBO and EFAME are often confused but serve different roles. ESBO is a long-chain triglyceride with molecular weight around 1000 and oxirane content of at least 6.0, offering strong plasticizing plus heat-stabilizing action. EFAME is a short-chain fatty acid methyl ester with molecular weight near 312 and oxirane content typically 3.6 or lower for composite grades. The lower oxirane value is structural, not a defect. EFAME's real advantage lies in lubrication and dispersion: its smaller, more polar molecules reduce screw torque, improve filler wetting, and yield smoother surfaces, making it ideal for highly filled or cost-sensitive soft PVC formulations. Many processors blend 5-10 parts ESBO with DOP to boost migration resistance and thermal stability without major cost increases.

    For food-contact or medical applications, choose refined ESBO grades with low odor and low VOC, not EFAME. For artificial leather exports, premium ESBO grades minimize blooming during storage. Always run a 7-day, 60-degree-Celsius oven aging test to compare exudation before committing to a new supplier or grade.
