How will US tariffs reshape China's GMA export competitiveness against Japanese and Korean suppliers?
The 2026 US tariff regime creates a structural cost gap for Chinese GMA exporters. Chinese-origin material faces stacked tariffs with no cap, while Japanese and Korean suppliers benefit from a 12.5% ceiling on combined MFN and 301 duties. For commodity-grade GMA, where price sensitivity is extreme, even a few percentage points of landed-cost difference triggers supplier switching. High-purity electronic-grade GMA offers some protection due to 1-3 year customer qualification cycles, but US buyers are increasingly adding Japanese or Korean sources as hedges. Transshipment via Southeast Asia is risky—US customs now scrutinizes origin claims, and simple repackaging without substantial chemical transformation invites penalties. Chinese producers should focus on high-purity grades and compliance documentation to retain premium niches.

Beyond tariffs, Chinese producers face a credibility gap in long-term supply assurance. Japanese firms like Mitsubishi Gas Chemical have decades of COA consistency and low-hydrolyzable-chlorine track records. Winning back US buyers requires not just purity specs but demonstrated batch-to-batch stability over multiple shipments—something intermittent distillation producers struggle to prove.
