Hungary will gradually cease gas supply to Ukraine.
Published on 2026-03-27

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on the 25th that due to the continuous obstruction of crude oil transportation to Hungary via the "Friendship" oil pipeline, the Hungarian government will gradually stop supplying natural gas to Ukraine. On that day, before the cabinet routine meeting, Orban released a video on social media, saying that Ukraine has blocked the oil pipeline for many days. "As long as Ukraine does not supply oil, it will not get natural gas from Hungary." He also said that Ukraine had attacked facilities related to the gas supply line in southern Hungary. Orban said that Hungary will give priority to ensuring domestic natural gas supply and increase gas storage to maintain its own energy security. Since January 27, the Ukrainian section of the "Friendship" oil pipeline has suspended the transportation of Russian crude oil to Europe. Hungary expressed dissatisfaction with this and blamed Ukraine. Since then, it has stopped exporting diesel, gasoline and other refined oil to Ukraine, and prevented the EU from providing 90 billion euros in aid loans to Ukraine.
