Is calcium nitrite safe to handle, and what are the risks of accidental ingestion or misuse?
Calcium nitrite is a member of the nitrite family, which also includes sodium and potassium nitrite. These compounds appear as white or pale yellow powders or granules with a salty, astringent taste, resembling table salt, which creates a serious risk of accidental ingestion. Acute nitrite poisoning occurs when a large dose oxidizes the iron in hemoglobin from ferrous to ferric state, forming methemoglobin that cannot carry oxygen. Symptoms include cyanosis, with lips and fingernails turning blue or purple, headache, dizziness, chest tightness, and in severe cases, coma or respiratory failure. The toxic threshold is roughly 0.3-0.5 grams of nitrite for adults, with 1-3 grams potentially fatal. Children and the elderly are more vulnerable due to weaker metabolic capacity. Unlike some chronic toxins, nitrite does not accumulate in the body; it is metabolized within hours, so poisoning is acute rather than cumulative. Industrial users must enforce strict labeling, segregation from food products, and proper training for workers.
