Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer Monomer Prices Rise on Cost Support and Tight Spot Supply (August 28–September 3, 2026)

Published on 2026-09-03
  1. Market Focus of the Week
  1. Cost: During the week, the related product ethylene glycol continued to rise, and ethylene oxide prices were raised, providing support from the cost side.

  2. Supply: Some monomer production units in the market operated at reduced loads, while previously overhauled units resumed operation. Overall supply volume did not change significantly.

  3. Demand: Downstream cost pass-through was not smooth, and buyers remained cautious about replenishing at high prices.

During this period (August 28 to September 3, 2026, same below), polycarboxylate superplasticizer monomer prices moved upward, with market trading remaining focused on essential demand. As of September 3, the mainstream price of polycarboxylate superplasticizer monomer EPEG in the East China market was 9,350 yuan/ton, up 500 yuan/ton from the previous week. The weekly average price of EPEG in the main East China market was 9,100 yuan/ton, up 350 yuan/ton week on week.

Specifically:

  1. East China market: Some units operated at reduced loads, leading to a slight contraction in market supply. On the raw material side, the ethylene glycol market strengthened sharply amid renewed geopolitical tensions, with cost increases and supply concerns pushing prices up, which in turn boosted the ethylene oxide market. Ethylene oxide prices were then raised. Supported by firm costs and tight spot supply of monomer, monomer prices continued to climb. Higher-priced new orders were mainly driven by essential-demand follow-up, and trading proceeded steadily.

  2. Northeast market: Production units in the region ran steadily, and market prices were pushed further upward. The market was strongly bullish, with holders reluctant to sell low-priced supply. Monomer producers generally had undelivered orders. Downstream customers were quite wait-and-see about the future market, cautious in taking goods, and preferred to purchase at lower price levels.

  3. South China market: Supply was broadly stable. After the raw material ethylene oxide price was raised, monomer producers reduced the availability of low-priced goods and prices moved higher. Downstream users remained cautious about high prices, purchasing in small quantities for essential needs. The trading atmosphere was subdued but stable.

  4. Market Influencing Factors (Data)

  1. Supply data: During this period, the capacity utilization rate of the domestic polycarboxylate superplasticizer monomer industry was 23.72%, up 0.10 percentage points from last week. Weekly production was 26,400 tons, up 0.38% from last week.

  2. Inventory data: As of Thursday, the sellable inventory ratio at domestic polycarboxylate superplasticizer monomer factories was -27.83%, down 2.53 percentage points from last week. Sellable inventory volume was -52,900 tons, down 4,800 tons from the previous week.

  3. Cost data: During this period, the weekly average cost of HPEG in East China was 8,866.6 yuan/ton, up 135.8 yuan/ton week on week. The weekly average cost of TPEG was 8,671.6 yuan/ton, up 135.8 yuan/ton week on week.

  4. Profit data: During this period, the weekly average profit of HPEG in East China was 333.4 yuan/ton, up 214.2 yuan/ton from last week. The weekly average profit of TPEG was 528.4 yuan/ton, up 214.2 yuan/ton from last week.

  1. Next Week Market Forecast
  1. Supply forecast: Monomer plant operating loads may undergo slight adjustments, and supply is unlikely to see any significant increase in the near term.

  2. Demand forecast: As the traditional peak season approaches, downstream will have a certain volume of essential-demand purchases.

  3. Cost forecast: Ethylene oxide prices may trend upward in the short term, offering support on the monomer cost side.

Overall assessment: Next week, polycarboxylate superplasticizer monomers are likely to run firm, with price movements depending more on changes in supply and demand.

  1. Supply: Monomer plant loads may undergo narrow adjustments, and market supply is unlikely to increase significantly for now. Operating rates are expected to remain at low levels. Monomer producers will mainly be delivering accumulated orders, so spot supply may remain tight, and there is no pressure on the supply side.

  2. Demand: This is the traditional peak demand season. As downstream superplasticizer producers consume their previous inventories, there is some restocking expectation. However, given cautious attitudes about chasing high prices, downstream buyers are likely to maintain an essential-purchase pace, and bulk procurement is not expected on the demand side for now.

  3. Cost: The geopolitical situation remains uncertain. Ethylene glycol port inventories are at low levels, and prices may remain elevated. Supply of the raw material ethylene oxide may fluctuate narrowly. Downstream industries are largely purchasing for essential needs. Ethylene spot supply in East China is still expected to remain tight, with supply-side support likely to push ethylene prices higher. In the short term, the ethylene oxide market is expected to have fundamental support, with an upward price expectation.

Rising EO feedstock costs are squeezing my margin, but tight spot supply is letting monomer prices climb 4% weekly despite cautious downstream demand.
