Weekly Data Analysis of China's Methanol Production and Capacity Utilization (May 15–21, 2026)

Published on 2026-05-21
  1. Qualitative Analysis of Production and Capacity Utilization Trends

This week (May 15–21, 2026), China’s methanol production totaled 2,008,695 tons, an increase of 53,690 tons from the previous week. The plant capacity utilization rate was 89.33%, up 2.75% week-on-week.

Table 1 Comparison of China’s weekly methanol production and capacity utilization data (unit: tons, %)

Item Current Week Previous Week WoW Change %
Production 2,008,695 1,955,005 2.75%
Capacity utilization 89.33% 86.94% 2.75%

New maintenance units were added during this period, including Shaanxi Jingyi Chemical, Xindongheng, CNOOC Chemical, Shandong Mingshui, Xufeng Heyuan, and one unit in Ningxia. In addition, two units in Xinjiang were newly cut back on output. Meanwhile, some units under maintenance or reduced operation resumed during the period, including Shanxi Linxin, China Coal Ordos, and one unit each in Xinjiang, Ningxia, and Anhui. Since the overall resumed capacity outweighed the lost capacity, production and capacity utilization both increased.

  1. Forecast of Production and Capacity Utilization Trends

Next week, China’s weekly methanol production and capacity utilization are expected to rise, with production forecast at approximately 2,061,800 tons and capacity utilization at approximately 91.69%. Planned capacity resumption exceeds the capacity scheduled for maintenance and output reduction, which is likely to drive capacity utilization and production higher.

  1. Comparison of Capacity Utilization and Price Trends

This week, China’s methanol capacity utilization stood at 89.33%, up 2.75% week-on-week and up 2.60% year-on-year. Domestic methanol capacity utilization rose markedly, increasing actual output. The market surged sharply, boosting the trading atmosphere. In addition, external purchases and stockpiling by some olefin enterprises warmed up market sentiment, leading to relatively firm but volatile methanol prices in the main production areas.

(Note: Some historical data have been revised; please refer to the latest release for this week’s data.)

Sample description: The China weekly methanol production and capacity utilization data from Chempricehub Information are first-hand statistics. The sample covers 178 domestic methanol producers, with a sample coverage rate of 100%. The statistical period runs from Friday of the previous week to Thursday of the current week, and the data are released every Thursday at 14:30 on working days.

Definitions:
Production: generally refers to the actual quantity of products meeting relevant standards produced by a manufacturer over a certain period (not the concept of marketable commodity volume, but rather the weight or volume of products under a given unit of measurement), i.e., actual output.

Capacity utilization rate: refers to the extent to which a manufacturer’s capacity is utilized, also known as operating load. It is generally calculated as the ratio of product output or raw material processing volume to effective capacity.

Statistical methodology: The statistical period for weekly production and capacity utilization is from Friday of the previous week to Thursday of the current week, and the data are released every Thursday at 14:30 on working days.

China's methanol capacity utilization at 89.33% signals strong supply recovery, but sustained output growth could pressure downstream margins if demand doesn't keep pace. Watching feedstock cost trends for volatility.
