Weekly Data Analysis of China's Methanol Production and Capacity Utilization Rate (June 5–11, 2026)

Published on 2026-06-11

1. Qualitative Analysis of Production and Capacity Utilization Trends

During the week (June 5–11, 2026), China’s methanol output was 2,062,175 tons, down 5,640 tons from the previous week. The plant capacity utilization rate was 91.62%, down 0.27 percentage points week-on-week.

Table 1 Comparison of China’s methanol weekly output and capacity utilization data (unit: tons, %)

Indicator This week Last week WoW change (%)
Output 2,062,175 2,067,815 -0.27%
Capacity utilization 91.62% 91.87% -0.27%

During this period, newly added maintenance units included Shandong Lianmeng, Xinjiang Zhongtai, Xinjiang Xinye, Gansu Liuhua, and Guizhou Tianfu. No new output-reduction units were added. Meanwhile, several units resumed operation after maintenance or output cuts, including Inner Mongolia Donghua, CNOOC Chemical, and one unit in Shaanxi. Because the total output loss in this period outweighed the resumption volume, output decreased and the capacity utilization rate declined.

2. Forecast Analysis of Production and Capacity Utilization Trends

Next week, China’s methanol weekly output and capacity utilization rate are expected to be approximately 2.056 million tons and 91.34%, respectively, down from this period. The capacity involved in planned maintenance and output cuts next week is greater than the capacity resuming operation, which may lead to a lower capacity utilization rate and reduced output.

3. Comparison of Capacity Utilization and Price Trends

This week, China’s methanol capacity utilization rate was 91.62%, down 0.27 percentage points week-on-week and up 4.09 percentage points year-on-year. The domestic methanol capacity utilization rate declined this week, leading to a decrease in actual output. As geopolitical conflicts resurfaced, the futures market surged and port inventories continued to fall. However, limited downstream follow-through buying restrained the overall upward range of the market.

(Note: Since some historical data have been revised, the latest data shall prevail for this week.)

Sample description: Chempricehub Information’s weekly China methanol output and capacity utilization data are first-hand statistics, covering 178 domestic methanol producers in China with a sample coverage rate of 100%. The statistical period runs from Friday of the previous week to Thursday of the current week, and the data are released at 14:30 every Thursday on working days.

Term explanation: Output generally refers to the quantity of goods actually produced by an enterprise during a period of time that meets relevant standards (not the concept of commercial quantity, but the weight or volume of goods under a given measurement system), i.e., actual output.

Capacity utilization rate refers to the degree of utilization of an enterprise’s production capacity, also known as operating load. It is generally calculated as the ratio of product output or raw material processing volume to effective capacity.

Statistical scope: The weekly statistical period for output and capacity utilization is from Friday of the previous week to Thursday of the current week. Data are released at 14:30 every Thursday on working days.

I see China's methanol capacity utilization slipping to 91.62% as maintenance outweighs restarts, but weak downstream buying should cap any margin improvement despite the futures bounce.
