What are the key cost and supply factors influencing 4-octylphenol prices in China?
4-Octylphenol pricing in China is heavily influenced by upstream phenol and benzene markets. Recent phenol market reports show significant volatility: in early April, phenol prices surged to around 9,600-10,300 yuan/ton, driven by benzene costs that jumped over 33% month-on-month, with crude oil spikes above USD 110 per barrel adding further cost pressure. However, by late May, phenol prices had fallen to roughly 7,800 yuan/ton as downstream demand weakened and the phenol-benzene spread compressed sharply. These swings directly impact alkylphenol producers, as phenol is a primary raw material. Supply-side factors include plant operating rates, which for phenol hovered around 86-87%, and inventory levels that remained low, limiting spot availability. For octylphenol specifically, production is often integrated with other alkylphenols, so capacity utilization and product mix decisions by major Chinese producers influence availability. Seasonal demand patterns, especially the traditional spring and autumn consumption peaks, also affect pricing dynamics.

Given the feedstock-driven volatility, buyers should track weekly phenol and benzene price trends as leading indicators for octylphenol contract negotiations. The recent collapse in phenol prices suggests potential downward pressure on octylphenol, but tight supply in specialty grades may offset this, so grade-specific quotes are essential.
