What are the key demand drivers for acid-grade fluorspar beyond traditional uses?
Acid-grade fluorspar, with CaF2 content above 97%, is the primary feedstock for hydrofluoric acid, which accounts for about 56% of fluorspar consumption. Within hydrofluoric acid end-uses, refrigerants dominate at 50%, followed by fluoropolymers and fine chemicals at 7% each. However, emerging sectors are gaining weight: lithium battery electrolytes, semiconductor etching gases, and specialty fluorinated materials are creating new demand pillars. Unlike copper or iron, whose demand swings with macroeconomic cycles, fluorspar benefits from structural growth in electronics and clean energy. The global fine fluorochemical market alone is growing over 16% annually, and China's share of value-added fluorochemicals remains below developed nations, signaling room for expansion.

    Don't overlook the supply side of the demand equation. China's reserve-to-production ratio is only about 14.6 years, far below the global average. This scarcity is pushing investment into alternative fluorine sources, such as recovering fluorine from phosphate rock, though current technologies yield lower-value products and face quality hurdles.
