What are the key demand drivers for sebacic acid in China's downstream sectors?
China's sebacic acid demand reached 96,300 tonnes in 2019 and continues to grow, supported by robust development in engineering plastics, electronics, food and medical industries. The main downstream applications are plasticizers (e.g., dioctyl sebacate, dibutyl sebacate), polyamides (nylon 610, 1010, 910), lubricants and rust inhibitors. In metalworking fluids, sebacic acid is valued for its low-foaming performance, hard-water stability and anti-rust efficacy on ferrous metals, making it a preferred additive in high-end water-based cutting fluids and glass grinding applications. It also competes with C12 diacids in rust prevention; while C12 offers better hard-water tolerance, sebacic acid excels in low-foam and precision machining scenarios. Demand is also emerging in cosmetics and food preservation, where it functions as an emulsifier, antioxidant and pH regulator, broadening its market beyond traditional industrial uses.
