What are the key differences between caustic soda flakes, liquid caustic, and soda ash in industrial use?
Caustic soda (NaOH) and soda ash (Na2CO3) are often confused but serve different roles. Caustic soda is a strong alkali, available as liquid (typically 30-32% or 40-42% concentration) or solid forms like flakes, pearls, and solid blocks. Liquid caustic is used widely as a neutralizer, decolorizer, and in water treatment, while flakes are common in papermaking, alumina refining, textiles, and soap production. Soda ash is a salt that hydrolyzes to give alkaline solutions but is milder; it is mainly consumed in glass, detergents, and chemicals. In chlor-alkali plants, caustic soda is co-produced with chlorine via membrane electrolysis, whereas soda ash is made via Solvay or trona processing. Their price trends diverge because feedstock and energy intensities differ, and downstream demand profiles barely overlap.

    A practical buying tip: if your process only needs pH adjustment, soda ash may be cheaper and safer to handle. But for strong alkalinity or saponification, caustic soda is irreplaceable. Always verify the concentration and impurity profile, especially carbonate content, which affects titration accuracy in lab use.
