What are the key supply-demand dynamics for DIBP in China's plasticizer market?
DIBP remains a workhorse plasticizer in China, valued for its solvency, dispersion, and adhesion, with performance close to DBP. It is widely used in PVC, cellulose resins, nitrile rubber, and chlorinated rubber applications. Supply is concentrated among integrated producers like Shandong Hongxin, which also makes phthalic anhydride and other plasticizers, giving them feedstock cost advantages. However, the regulatory environment is tightening. DIBP is listed as a reproductive toxicant, and several multinational firms have already banned its use. China's proposed RoHS expansion, if finalized, would add DIBP to restricted substances in electronics, potentially reducing demand growth. Meanwhile, substitution pressure from DINP and non-phthalate alternatives is increasing, especially in food contact and children's products. Still, DIBP's cost-effectiveness ensures continued use in industrial applications like paints, adhesives, and sealants, where regulatory limits are less stringent.
