What are the main application areas driving demand for basic chromium sulfate?
Basic chromium sulfate is primarily used as a leather tanning agent, where it imparts softness, water resistance, and color fastness. It also serves as a mordant in dyeing, a catalyst in ceramic and cellulose production, and a raw material for pigments. Emerging applications include trivalent chromium electroplating as a safer alternative to hexavalent chromium, and as an intermediate for other chromium chemicals. Demand is closely tied to the leather industry, which faces environmental pressure, but growth in specialty applications such as catalysts and ceramics offers diversification. The overall chromium salt market in China is around 400,000-500,000 tonnes annually, with basic chromium sulfate representing a significant share.

Watch the leather sector closely—China's environmental crackdowns have shifted some tanning capacity to Southeast Asia. That said, trivalent chromium plating is gaining regulatory tailwinds in Europe, which could open new export opportunities for Chinese producers.
