Acetic anhydride serves as a key acetylating agent across multiple industries. Its largest downstream application is cellulose acetate production, which is heavily used in cigarette filter tow—a stable, high-volume consumer segment. The pharmaceutical sector is another major outlet, particularly for aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) synthesis, where acetic anhydride is preferred over acetic acid because it avoids water generation and drives higher conversion rates. Additional demand comes from dyes, flavors, fragrances, and specialty chemicals. In laboratory and industrial settings, acetic anhydride is valued for acetylation reactions, Friedel-Crafts acylations, and as a mild dehydrating agent where strong acids like sulfuric acid would degrade sensitive substrates, such as nitro compounds. This diversified downstream base provides a degree of demand resilience even when individual sectors slow.
