What are the main production routes for DMF and how do feedstock costs influence competitiveness?
Industrial DMF production relies on two main routes: the methyl formate route starting from methanol and CO, and direct carbonylation of dimethylamine with CO. Both depend on CO availability, making coal-to-chemical integration a decisive cost factor. Hualu-Hengsheng leverages its coal gasification platform in Shandong to produce both methanol and CO internally, achieving raw material costs roughly 15% below industry average. Emerging CO2-based synthesis—using CO2, hydrogen, and dimethylamine over ruthenium catalysts—has shown high efficiency in lab and pilot stages, with single-turnover numbers up to 1.94 million and catalyst stability over 12 cycles. However, high pressure requirements (up to 70 atm) and hydrogen costs still limit commercial viability. For now, coal-based producers in China maintain the cost edge, while overseas players like BASF and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical rely on natural gas or purchased CO.
