What are the main uses of 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethanol (diethylene glycol monobutyl ether)?
Diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (DGBE), also known as butyl carbitol or 'Da Fang Bai' in China, is a high-boiling, low-volatility glycol ether solvent. Its primary application is in coatings and paints, where it acts as a slow-evaporating co-solvent that improves flow, leveling, and gloss while preventing film blushing (whitening) in high-humidity conditions. It is also widely used in printing inks, cleaners, metal degreasers, and as a coalescing aid in waterborne architectural coatings. Beyond solvents, DGBE serves as an intermediate for plasticizers and brake fluid formulations. Its low VOC contribution versus faster solvents makes it attractive for environmentally regulated coating systems, though it still requires careful handling due to flammability and toxicity considerations.

From a sourcing perspective, buyers should note that DGBE quality varies by application. Coatings demand strict moisture control to avoid film defects, while brake fluid synthesis requires tight acid value and impurity limits. Always request COA and MSDS per batch, and verify supplier logistics credentials for hazardous chemical transport, especially in South China where local warehousing speeds delivery.
